Colgate-Palmolive Summer 2022 interns
The Colgate-Palmolive Company has been generously providing funding for trainees from underrepresented minority groups to conduct 10 week summer research projects focused on pigment cell biology with PASPCR supervisors. Now that we have this shiny new website, we would like to highlight the 2022 interns as well. Without further ado, here they are!

Alfredo Mendoza Varela
Alan is 21 years old, born and raised in Colima, México. He is a third-year medicine student at the University of Colima, and his aspiration is to become a neurosurgeon or pediatrician. In high school, he had the opportunity to do laboratory training practice at the Hospital Regional Universitario of Colima for a period of 6 months, where he learned about the different clinical analyses that are used to find the causes of disease and improve health. Studying the subjects of genetics and molecular medicine and working at the hospital during his first year awoke his interest in doing research. He worked with Dr. Daniela Robles Espinoza!

Karen Lizette Guzman Ochoa
Karen is from Colima State in México. Ever since she was a little girl, she had the motivation to study medicine, so that she could help others. She completed high school at No. 4 School, mastering the subject of chemical analysis. She learned about hematology, biochemistry and microbiology, as well as many laboratory techniques. She also worked in a hospital laboratory where she had contact with many patients. When she finished high school in 2021, she entered the School of Medicine in Colima. She was ranked 3rd out of 600 students in the admissions exam, and she has been teaching other students how to prepare for the exam. At the medical school, she continues giving her best every day to improve the academic environment and to exemplify the values that her family instilled in her. Karen worked with Dr. Daniela Robles Espinoza with Alan.

Vanessa Hernandez
Vanessa Hernandez is 18 years old and a recent graduate of Union High School in Vancouver, Washington. In her free time, she likes to paint and go on walks with her family. She also enjoys participating and competing in FBLA, the Future Business Leaders of America organization, and DECA, a career and technical student organization. Her future goals are to attend University and explore different career paths. She is currently interested in exploring business careers and STEM careers. Vanessa worked with Dr. Cynthia Cooper!

Valeria Hernandez
Valeria Hernandez is 18 years old and also a recent graduate of Union High School in Vancouver, Washington. During her free time, she enjoys reading fiction books, painting, listening to music and hanging out with friends and family. Some activities that she enjoys are participating in the FBLA, DECA and learning more about STEM fields. Her goal after high school is to pursue higher education. She hopes to explore more career opportunities within STEM and other fields. Valeria also worked with Dr. Cynthia Cooper along with Vanessa.
